Seeking Temporary Locum Neonatologists at McMaster Children’s Hospital NICU

The Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University is seeking temporary locum neonatologists with the requirements listed below to provide clinical service in the NICU of McMaster Children’s Hospital at the level of an Attending Neonatologist, including supervision/evaluation of learners.

About the NICU at McMaster Children’s Hospital: The NICU is one of the largest in Canada, with >1,000 admissions annually. It offers the full breadth of neonatal care, encompassing high acuity deliveries, a regional transport service and peri-operative management of surgical abnormalities. We operate at a census of approximately 50-56 patients in the level 3 NICU, and 14-16 patients in our level 2 nursery.

Training and Credentials:

  1. Completed Medical School with an MD (or equivalent degree)

  2. Completed training within an accredited Pediatrics Residency Program

  3. Successful completion of an accredited Neonatology Fellowship Program (with either successfully competing the Neonatal Royal College Examination or SEAP [equivalent for IMGs])

  4. Must already have/or the ability to acquire a licence (certificate of registration) to practice in Ontario (either independent or provisional) by the CPSO

Attending Service:

  • Weekdays: There are 5 lines of service (3 acute lines in the level 3 NICU with ~17-18 patients, 1 line in the level 2 nursey with ~14-16 patients and 1 line of service to manage labour/delivery and transport). Each service line has front-line medical care providers (fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants - ~2-3 per line of service).

  • Weekend Days: There are 2 attending neonatologists during the daytime with ~6-7 front-line care providers.

  • Night calls: There is 1 attending on call; while in-house is not mandated, it is often necessary given the acuity and complexity of the NICU. There are ~3 front-line staff members on call in house, usually including a fellow who is the lead clinician reporting to the attending.

Service Commitments: We are seeking to fill up to 12-16 weeks service annually encompassing weekday (Mon-Fri) daytime coverage in the NICU (a combination of level 3, level 2, and/or Labour/Delivery/Transport service). Ideally, the successful candidate(s) will contribute to night calls (up to 3 per month) and weekend clinical coverage (up to 1-2 every 4-6 weeks). Availability of shifts is contingent on the presence of gaps in the schedule and are not guaranteed to the candidate(s).

Remuneration: Will be discussed directly with the Department of Pediatrics.

Applicants will be sought until June 30th, 2026, or until the position(s) are filled.
