HEAD, DIVISION OF PEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE
Full-Time Academic Position – CHEO and The University of Ottawa

CHEO is recruiting a full-time Pediatric Intensivist for the role of Division Head, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. CHEO plays a critical regional role as the only Level 3 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) serving Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, and the Qikiqtani region of Nunavut. The mission of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa is to expand our impact on the health of individuals and populations in both official languages through interdisciplinary education, research and responsive care. The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) therefore represents an essential component of CHEO’s mission as a tertiary pediatric academic health sciences center providing excellent clinical care, teaching, innovation and research.

This is an exciting opportunity as the Division is entering a period of strategic renewal, transformation and growth. As the incoming Division Head, you will champion strategic priorities that enhance quality, access, and sustainability, including the integration of services, development of a continuity-based care model, and strengthening of multidisciplinary collaboration across the clinical team. You will help position the Division to meet future tertiary care needs, including the planned return of cardiac surgical activity, while advancing quality benchmarking and expanding CHEO’s regional and virtual care footprint.

CHEO’s Department of Pediatrics and its Division of Pediatric Critical Care are closely associated with the CHEO Research Institute and division members have academic appointments with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. There is a vibrant RCPSC-approved, two-year Pediatric Critical Care Medicine subspecialty residency training program.

The Division comprises 11 PCCM physicians and cares for critically ill children and youth across a Level 3 PICU and a Level 2/ step-down service (Transitional Acute Care Team), which are in the process of integrating into a more unified model of care. Its members are a dynamic, diverse, and highly engaged group of academic clinicians. The Division also leads a rapid response (SPOT) team, providing critical care outreach to patients on inpatient wards and in outpatient settings to identify deterioration early and improve outcomes. The intensivists in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine also support CHEO’s Critical Care Transport Team that covers Eastern, Southeast and Northern Ontario, and Western Quebec (440,000 km2), by providing clinical support for patients beyond the neonatal period. Together with SPOT and transport, this reflects the Division's growing role in regional outreach, virtual care, and system leadership across a large geography.

Reporting to the Chair/Head of the Department of Pediatrics, the Division Head leads the PCCM faculty members, providing strategic, academic, and operational leadership at CHEO and UOttawa to advance our mission, vision and strategic priorities. They are responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of care delivered by the Division, including oversight of clinical coverage, operational performance, and resource allocation in partnership with the designated hospital operational co-lead. The incumbent will have the opportunity and support to include other Division members in fulfilling this mandate under their leadership.

The candidate must have an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. The candidate must also hold certification in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent. Candidates must be eligible for a full-time academic appointment in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. English is the language of the health record, functionality in French is an asset.

We invite applications from Pediatric Intensivists with tertiary-care and leadership experience and a proven record of achievement in patient care, clinical program development, education, research, or quality improvement. Demonstrated experience leading change and building cohesive teams is highly valued. Experience with ECMO and cardiac critical care, neurocritical care and /or POCUS would be an asset.
